Boron is regularly used as an additive for drilling fluids for oil and gas
production to enhance lubrication, provide crosslinking properties for
polymers and pH control.  Boron is often used in hydraulic fracking as a
crosslinker to form controllable gel formation that will not degrade over
time or pressure.  The borates are water soluble allowing for easy clean up
versus other gel formation alternatives.
